disagree on Ernie Kent rail. He is a helluva floor coach and a good recruiter too. When he was at St.Mary's, I got the opportunity to see them in several WCC tournaments. He would have his team so prepared that they would know the other team's inbound plays when they would call them before the other team would. Last year he was hurt by Jackson's injury and a lack of inside game.
I still disagree on Pat Douglass as well, but we won't rehash that.

How could you leave off Westphal, is there a worse-coached team in America than Pepperdine.

Completely agree on Williams, Boeheim, and Olsen. I would add Mike Brey to the list. And as far as good coaches throw Kelvin Sampson on to that side, his team always plays feisty D, and he even turned the program around in the Pallouse, which is not easy.

Mike Montgomery, Rick Barnes (as much as I dislike him), and Tom Izzo are all solid as well.

how is it off the wall.

when betting coll hoops - betting on a great coach - or against a moron is part of the bet

as for coaches rail missed:

Seth Greenburg: has ANYONE ever done less and gotten credit for more than seth? he did a good job at long beach - but bombed at south florida - and his "reward" was a job at Va. Tech. the coaches in the big east - and soon acc - have to be drooling over this idiot coaching in their league.

Wayne Mor(on)gan: He is the worst coach i have ever seen. he was a disaster at long beach - quitting/fired in disgrace. so he shows up at iowa state and after eustachy did what he did morgan - or as i call him, mor(on)gan because he is just that. once he gets into big XII action - watch him get outcoached EVERY game.

Winky: I think he makes those comments in regards to the unecessary addons next to some of the coaches. What does Quinn Snyder being a supposed homosexual have anything to do with betting?

Does anyone know how many NCAA titles the coaches on Rail's list have won? Just curious.

max,
Lute won one in spite of himself.
Boeheim got one he should give to Melo permanently.
And Gary Williams got one a few years back (I like G.Williams as a coach, though).
Not sure about kryszewski. (How to spell it, or how many titles he won)
If I had to guess I'd say 2.

Oh, and Fisher actually got one I believe the year he took over for Freider. Holy crap, how did they win in spite of him?

as for rail's post about the duke coaches being overrated - 100% agree with that. as for what he posted after that - i'll stay away from that - but snyder and amaker are below average coaches and coach k gets outcoached more times then anyone will admit - it's just the fact he has superior talent that helps him win.

Come on. If Coach K has such great talent, why aren't there more Duke players in the NBA?

Unless I'm forgetting somebody, Grant Hill is the only NBA All-Star from Duke in the last...20 years? 30 years?

Green,

Ernie was fortunate enough to have Big Contitnent at StMarys and outtalented some other teams in the WCC, but his teams play zero defense, Majerus took a makeshift team with 7 suited players in the tourney last yr and beat them when they should have lost by 15.

agree with Winky,

Seth had Byron Russell and Lucsious Harris and played in a weak confrence at the beach. I do like Seth as a tv analyst though. Wayne Moragon comes from Boheim, guy will buther ISU like he did at Lb state.

Its quality posters with knowledge like Winky,GreenD, and Funk that keep me coming back here. It sure as heck isnt the recreational squares that are in the Gen forum. If I would have taken Green D advice on games he disagreed with me I would be hitting 46-21 instead of 41-26.

Thanks for the compliment Rail,
As for Kent, I have great respect for Coach Kent as a coach and a person, knowing him personally going back to my LMU days when he was at SMC.
I follow Ducks very closely because of him, and when I saw that matchup on the brackets last year I said uh-oh. It was terrible matchup for Oregon and remembering that game vaguely, Ridnour played probably the worst game of his career. I do agree they could play better defense, but for game preparedness, Coach Kent is right up there with any of them.

Here is my opinion on the best and worst coaches in the major conferences, I may go back and look at the smaller conferences later. All opinions welcome. This is purely coaching, not counting recruiting, meaning if you gave the coaches the same five players, who would come out on top.

ACC
Best: Hewitt (Ga. Tech) Honorable Mention: Purnell (Clemson) Hamilton (Fla. St.)
Worst: R. Williams (UNC) Hon Men: Gillen (UVA)

A-10
Best: Wainright (Richmond) HM: Martelli (St. Joe's)
Worst: Lappas (UMass-might be worst in country) HM: Nee (Duquesne)

Big East
Best: Beilein (W.VA) HM: Welsh (Providence)
Worst: Brey (ND), Boeheim ('Cuse), Esherick (G-Town), Greenberg (Va. Tech)

Big Ten
Best: Keady (Purdue), Ryan (Wisc) HM: Monson(Minn)
Worst: Amaker (Mich) HM:O'Brien (Ohio St)

Big 12
Best: Sutton (Okla St.) HM: Sampson (Okla.)
Worst: Snyder (Mizzou) HM: Watkins (A & M)

C-USA
Best: Crean (Marquette) HM: Huggins (Cincy)
Worst: Green (S. Miss) HM: Calipari (Memphis)

Mountain West
Best: Layer (Col. St.), Majerus (Utah) HM: Scott (AFA)
Worst: Fisher (SDST) HM: McKay (N.Mex)

Pac-10
Best: Bennett (WSU) HM: Montgomery (Stan), Braun (Cal)
Worst: Olsen (Ariz) HM: Bibby (USC)

SEC
Best: Odom (So.Car) HM: Stansbury (Miss. St.)
Worst: Smith (Kentucky) HM: Ellis (Aub)

Tubby Smith!?!? Kentucky was 16-0 in the SEC last year, and I wouldn't say they were loaded with talent. They had some good players in a good system.

Cliff Ellis? Hell ya! Auburn's recent game against UNLV was pathetic. I got the feeling Auburn was playing a pick-up game @ the local gym. They had no focus, no concentration.

I would give Mike Bibby the Pac-10 Worst award. How many years has USC had decent talent only to struggle towards a .500 record? And when USC made the NCAA Tourney in 2002, they were upset in the 1st round by UNCW.

Haven't really paid attention to Cal this year, but I know they're off to a slow start. They lost to Air Force tonight. Is it coaching, talent, etc?

I'd give the Pac-10 Best Award to Montgomery, simply because of seniority over Bennett. But both have taken teams that were deemed "too slow" and "boring" deep into the NCAA Tourney.

Anyway, all of this is good info. Coaching definitely becomes a bigger factor once conference play begins.

Also agree on Quin Snyder. Not sure if he is gay or not, but Mizzou has been under-achieving for a couple years.

This year, I'm willing to give Snyder the benefit of the doubt. You had the Clemons debacle, and Mizzou wasn't even sure if they'd be eligible to play in the NCAA Tourney this year. So I'm sure that made it tough for the players to focus.

Then you had Conley/Pulley joining the team. So I'll give Mizzou a couple games to adjust. But if Mizzou isn't playing well by February, you gotta blame Snyder.

However, if you *do* think Mizzou is capable of improving their play, January/February is a great time to bet on them. After the Gonzaga/Memphis games, I think you can get some decent value on Mizzou. Lots of gamblers have jumped off the Tiger bandwagon.

I pretty much agree with Green

WCC-

Dont like- Brad Holland, Westphal,
Like - Few, Eggers

BigWest- Like- Bob Williams, Stew Morrill, Braswell, Thorton
dontlike - Douglass

Also side note-

Howland didnt let his kids meet former Bruion players 3 hours before MSU game last weekend, pretty weak IMO. I dont like the guy, and Im not sure he is what he is made out to be.

I'd give Stew Morrill the class of the Big West. Braswell has done good job at Northridge, but I'm afraid that will always be an uphill battle. Williams seems to have Gauchos on right track.
Who is Thorton? Do you mean Thomason at UoP? He is pretty good.

And you know we disagree on Douglass. At least we know he's a better coach than Westphal.

Howland, I like, not so much from his Pitt days, but from his NAU days. He made that program successful which is not an easy thing to do. 10 years ago we REALLY wanted him at LMU, but we made some egregious coaching hires after that.
